In order to meet the growing energy demand of Côte d'Ivoire and make this country the energy hub of West Africa, the Ivorian government decided in 1997 to build the Azito thermal power plant. Azito Energie SA, now a subsidiary of the IPS West Africa (West Africa) group and Globeleq (a British company specializing in the development of energy projects in Africa) was thus created to finance, build and operate this future thermal power plant as part of a BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) type contract.
