Following the decision of the Government of Burkina Faso to partially deregulate the cotton sector, IPS(WA) created Faso Coton in Burkina Faso in 2004. Its main activities are:
- The supervision of more than 30,000 cotton farmers in the centre of Burkina Faso (Ouagadougou),
- Cottonseed collection, transportation, and ginning,
- The sale of seed and fibre, locally and for export,
- The development of organic cotton cultivation,
- Active participation in the operations of Burkina’s national research centre regarding the introduction of innovative technologies to improve yield.
Faso Coton’s growth strategy is to:
- Improve the net income of cotton farmers by increasing productivity in the field,
- Increase cotton production by developing innovative cultivation techniques, capturing new cultivation zones, and providing sound agricultural advice.
- Develop labelling initiatives for sustainable cotton (Faso Coton is labelled “Cotton made in Africa”).
- Adapt its production tool to support production development in its intervention zone.
From an initial plant of 30 000 tons located in Ouagadougou at its creation, Faso Coton has improved its industrial capacity up to 70 000 tons, thanks to the construction of a new plant in Tenkodogo.
